Over 100 Palauans attend Whipps rally

On the evening of Aug. 31, from 6pm to nearly midnight, Palauans on Saipan came together in Susupe for a gathering filled with hope and determination.

The event, held in a spirit of unity and celebration, focused on the vision they share with President Surangel S. Whipps Jr.—a thriving Palau that puts the needs of its people first. The crowd estimate was over 100.

In a heartfelt and alcohol-free environment, attendees delved into the transformative journey that began when Whipps took office in 2021. The president, alongside his dedicated team, painted a vivid picture of the hurdles faced at the outset: a pandemic that stalled an already sluggish economy, deteriorating school infrastructure, an aging hospital, and a minimum wage stagnant since 2013.

Challenges extended to a struggling tax system, marked by inefficiencies and low compliance, as highlighted by a 2008 U.S. Government Accountability Office report. Yet, amidst these daunting obstacles, Whipps’ resolve never wavered. His leadership was unwavering as he and his administration navigated the pandemic, sought new economic opportunities, and championed a fair tax reform.

The impact of Whipps’ efforts is clear. In just over three years, Palau has begun to emerge from the economic downturn with renewed vigor. New flight connections to Australia, Taiwan, and other islands have reinvigorated tourism, while the Palau-Guam flight resumed operations with increased frequency.

With an eye on the future, Whipps has boldly steered Palau into the digital realm. The growing digital residency program and the exploration of innovative projects like Palau Stablecoin are testament to his forward-thinking vision. Modernized tax reforms, crafted with accountability and fairness, are already benefiting Palauans. His initiatives include a child tax credit, help for our nation’s elderly, and enhanced support for individuals with disabilities, ensuring that the benefits of progress reach those who need them most.

The recent 2024 Compact Review Agreement with the U.S. represents a landmark achievement, securing $889 million to enhance health, education, and public safety while also, for the first time, addressing climate change. This historic agreement also introduces unprecedented support for U.S. military veterans residing in Palau and expands educational opportunities with in-state tuition benefits.

Exciting developments are underway, including the construction of a new hospital and ongoing renovations at the Belau National Hospital to improve patient care. Schools are receiving essential upgrades, from new facilities to safer infrastructure, ensuring a brighter future for Palau’s children. Also work to build a much-needed new K-12 school in Babeldaob is underway.

As the event concluded, it was clear that the heart of Palau beats strongly with hope and unity. With Whipps’ proven track record and unwavering dedication, the journey toward a brighter, more prosperous Palau continues with renewed enthusiasm and collective resolve. (PR)
