Prospects 1, Madflex 1 win 3×3 tourney

Prospects 1 and Madlfex 1 outplayed several other teams in Matt Duenas’ 3×3 Youth Tournament that was held from last Thursday to Saturday at the Gilbert C. Ada Gymnasium.

In the 13U finals last Saturday, Prospects 1 outscored Prospects 4, 18-10, while in the 16U championships, Madflex defeated Rollers 2, 13-4. There were no game stats available.

Prospects 1 was made up of Leon Dunas, David Apatang, Liam Wilson, and Jairus Pangilinan. They slipped past Rollers 1, 11-6 in the semis, and were in the winners’ bracket with an undefeated record of five wins.

Madflex 1 consisted of Jezpher Navarro, Jonne Navarro, Onick Ragbonshe, and Christian Lucero. They cruised through the tourney, beating Rollers teams and other Madflex teams—defeating Rollers 1, 13-5 in the semis.

The tourney was organized by Prospects assistant coach, Matt Duenas.

He said after the awarding that he wanted to host this tournament for the youth. The tournament was supposed to be held last Christmas, but there were some issues and was pushed to January instead.

Duenas said he chose the 13U and 16U age divisions because, “I just wanted the kids to come out and showcase their skills, and also keep them away from any negative stuff out there, keep them busy, and let them play what they love to play.”

There were about 104 participants in the three-day tourney from different basketball clubs such as Madflex, Rollers, Prospects, and some school teams.

He added that future tourneys will also be in a 3×3 format as it’s a much faster gameplay and also lets a lot more children play. He also said that a meeting will be held to see whether other ball clubs will be hosting future monthly tourneys.

Duenas thanked the sponsors Bridge Capital LLC, Priority Care, and Saipan Ice & Water, and also Ada Gym for the ideal venue.
