SIS, MHS whiz past foes in girls soccer
Saipan International School Lady Geckos and Marianas High School Lady Dolphins whizzed past their foes in the NMIFA-PSS Girls High School Interscholastic Soccer League 2023-2024 last Thursday at the NMI Soccer Training Center in Koblerville.
The Lady Geckos won a 5-1 showdown against Saipan Southern High School Lady Manta Rays, while the Lady Dolphins held on to win by a razor-thin margin, 3-2, over the Kagman High School Lady Ayuyus.
SIS didn’t get on the board first, but they went on to add more points than SSHS. SSHS’ Jahsmin Ramon scored the lone goal in the fifth minute, which was quickly overshadowed by SIS’ Andrei Kaithlyn Chavez’s goal just a minute later.
Chavez zigged and zagged through unaware SSHS defenders until she found the back of the net 10 minutes later, for a 2-1 game. Irene Park followed in her footsteps for a 3-1 lead.
No more goals were made until the turn of the second half, when Audrey Castro let one loose in the 43rd minute. SSHS’ hope to keep the gap close was then dashed when Phoenix Gross scored the fifth goal. SSHS could not find an opening past SIS defenders and settled for the loss as time ran out.
In the MHS vs. KHS game, MHS’ early first half goals held on to win them the game as KHS tried to rally.
MHS’ Tamia Kileleman-Hix scored right off the opening whistle, just as KHS were still getting their bearings straight. Not eight minutes later, teammate Raven Anderson made it 2-0, and quickly added another goal in the 11th minute before KHS could even blink.
The rest of the first half went on silently, with both teams struggling for possession. It ended without a peep from KHS attackers, but in the beginning of the second half, Pia Ngewakl made it 1-3.
The Lady Ayuyus still had time to make a comeback and Ngewakl knew it as she scored the second goal in the 42nd minute to make it 2-3. However, MHS’ defense wore them down and made sure no more damage to their goal was made and KHS fell by just one goal.
