SMO hosts Korean Junior Big Band exchange
The Saipan Mayor’s Office recently hosted youth band students from the Korean Junior Big Band group during a five-day visit to Saipan.
During the visit, the students got a chance to explore and experience the island’s culture and lifestyle. On a sightseeing tour, the group visited locations such as the Korean Peace Memorial, Bird Island Lookout, Grotto, and other locations around island.
The students also got a chance to gain cultural knowledge and enrichment through activities such as a visit to the 500 Sails Boatyard, where they got to see and learn about traditional sailing vessels and techniques, and the Joeten-Kiyu Public Library, where library staff welcomed the students and engaged them in historical and cultural activities.
They viewed cultural artifacts and crafts, such as ancient weapons and beads, and learned how to make flower pins, banana painting, coconut husking and experienced cooking coconut candy. The students even got a chance to try their hand in learning some Chamorro.
A large part of this exchange trip saw the Korean Junior Big Band get a chance to share their great talents with the people of Saipan. The band performed at several locations and events throughout Saipan. Their first performance saw them give a concert to our island’s man’amko at the Office of Aging much to the delight of its patrons. The students also got a chance to perform at Marianas High School where they got to meet and interact with fellow youth. Performances were also held at the President’s Cup at the Koblerville Soccer Facility and the Taste of the Marianas.
On the recreational side, the students got to stay with local host families over the weekend and spend time with them. The group also enjoyed a fun day at Mañagaha Island.
Saipan Mayor Ramon B. “RB” Camacho met with the students and handed out certificates of appreciation. He talked with the students and asked them to share their experiences with family and friends back in South Korea and to encourage them to visit the island.
For any questions or more information, contact the Saipan Mayor’s office at (670) 234-6208. Office hours are Monday through Friday, 7:30am to 4:30pm. The Saipan Mayor’s Office is also open through lunch. (PR)
