Senate president nixes delegate run
Senate President Edith DeLeon Guerrero (D-Saipan) says she has begun her Senate reelection campaign for coming general elections.
In an interview with Saipan Tribune, DeLeon Guerrero said she has officially shut down plans of running for U.S delegate, saying she’s decided to seek re-election as senator this upcoming general elections which is set for Nov. 5.
The current Senate president added that she has been campaigning for the past month.
“I am seeking re-election as a senator. I’ve picked up my documents from the board of election and my petitions are going around. Friends and family are also helping me walk my petitions around to get signatures for me. I’ve been doing that for a month and a half now. The time to file paperwork isn’t here yet so right now, it’s just a lot of quiet moves, making sure I’m respectful of people, going about my business, and continuing to do what I’m doing for the public,” she said.
In a previous article on Saipan Tribune, DeLeon Guerrero confirmed that she is leaving the NMI Democratic Party and whether she runs for delegate or seeks re-election or for another post, it will be as an independent candidate.
This is the last year of DeLeon Guerrero’s first four-year term as a senator.
DeLeon Guerrero made CNMI history as the first woman to serve as Senate president.
Aside from Deleon Guerrero, Sens. Paul A. Manglona (Ind-Rota) abd Karl R. King-Nabors (R-Tinian) have also recently announced that they are seeking re-election this November.
In addition, last April 5, House Committee on Education chair Rep. Manny Gregory Tenorio Castro (Ind-Saipan) announced his candidacy for Senate.
For those interested in voting this upcoming general elections, the Commonwealth Election Commission will conduct a voter registration drive on Saipan, Tinian, and Rota starting next month in preparation for the Nov. 5, 2024, general election.
On Saipan, the voter registration drive will be on June 1 at the Kagman Community Center, June 8 at the Tanapag Youth Center, June 15 at the San Vicente Youth Center and Koblerville Youth Center, and on June 22 at the Carolinian Affairs Office. Registration will be held from 8:30am to 1:30pm.
On Tinian, the voter registration drive and acceptance of nominating petition of candidacy will be conducted on July 8 to 9 at the Tinian Public Library from 7:30am to 4:30pm.
On Rota, the voter registration drive and acceptance of nominating petition of candidacy will be conducted on July 8 and 9 at the Rota Man Amko Center from 7:30am to 4:30pm.
CEC said previously registered voters who have failed to vote in the 2020 and 2022 general election must re-register to be eligible to vote in the 2024 general election.
For first-time voters, they must provide proof of U.S. citizenship, such as valid U.S. passport or birth certificate, or mayor’s identification card.
