Youth theater to stage ‘Property Rites’ on Nov. 17-18

The Friends of the Arts is dedicating its 2023-2024 season to young people across the CNMI, starting with a production centered on the issue of artificial intelligence. Entrance is free.

The Friends of the Arts Youth Theatre will be staging the production Property Rites this Friday and Saturday, Nov. 17 and 18, starting at 7pm at the Pedro P. Tenorio Multi-Purpose Center.

“Come and enjoy the show and the talent of our youth. There is no charge for admission. Contributions for our youth theater will be accepted and appreciated,” said the Friends of the Arts in a mass email yesterday.

According to the FOA email, the production takes place in an art studio that has invested millions in a high-tech work of art—15 human figure sculptures programmed to perform thousands of movements, monologues, dialogues, and more. But just when the owner is about to sell a sculpture, it “malfunctions”; the figures are “alive.”

“As each one struggles to achieve autonomy, they begin a fatal race against their desperate owner’s destructive plan. [This play is] an interesting look at the AI issue from both sides,” states the FOA email.

This production is just the start of the youth theater’s 2023-2024 season. Next up will be a collection of short plays referred to as The 10 Minute Plays in February, which will be a production of the FOA Youth Theatre in conjunction with the FOA Community Performers.

“We will then be honored by the annual visit in March by classical pianist, Roman Rudnytsky who will share his talents with the youth of our islands by visiting schools for performances and workshops,” states the FOA.

The last production in this youth-oriented series of productions will be an FOA Youth Theatre production of a Broadway musical from the Music Theatre International series of Musicals “Broadway Junior.” (Saipan Tribune)
