A combination of the old and new

Kevin’s Café and Catering celebrated their grand opening last Sunday joining the growing number of restaurants on island.

What makes them stand out, however, is that they are able to bring back old favorites in its location at the ground floor of Gold Beach Hotel on Beach Road.

According to president Jennifer Etayda, they serve a mix of Filipino and Chamorro food.

“Our cooks, including my husband Mike who was a chef at Pacific Islands Club Saipan years ago, have vast experience working in hotels so they manage to cook a variety of dishes… we are open for breakfast until dinner so the community can expect good food at any time of the day,” she said.

“After many years of living on Saipan, we know how people love empanadas, donuts, and chicken kelaguen of the former Kevin’s Supermarket in Chalan Kanoa and so we made it them available here—same taste, quality, and price,” she added.

Kevin’s Café and Catering is a no-frills restaurant as they consider the restaurant a fastfood joint. “We know people are busy and when it is time to eat, we know that they want the food that they are familiar with and that is also one of the reasons why we have the empanadas, donuts, and kelguens available during breakfast,” Etayda said.

“For lunch, we offer two choices of viands with rice for only $6 and for one choice, $4. Our empanadas and donuts go for $1 each and the chicken kelaguen goes for $2.50. By dinner time, we offer ala carte menu and every Sunday, we have lunch buffet for only $9.99 where we serve Filipino, Chamorro, Chinese food, and soon Thai dishes,” Etayde added.

Etayda said that the interior décor of the café speaks to people who love color and creativity.

“Our children gave us the idea that this place should make people feel that it is ‘okay to hang out and talk with friends or for people to do some work with their laptops. The café is spacious and our walls speak of an urban New York- style café.”

“We have coffee, milkshakes in chocolate, vanilla, strawberry, and cookies and cream flavors. They can partner their drinks with our cheeseburger, nachos and our specialty—chili cheese fries. Our WiFi is strong and available to our customers,” Etayda added.

As added service, Kevin’s Café and Restaurant does food deliveries, pickups not only available to guests of Gold Beach Hotel but for the public. They also do catering that is affordable and for any occasion.

Etayda and her husband are longtime business people on island. They also provide manpower services to various businesses on island and this café is their new baby.

“People ask me why put up a restaurant and I tell them of our experience handling a snack bar in our former video store business. It was small but it gave us an idea how to handle food and customers,” she said.

“Since we are in the business of manpower, we know how people need jobs to make a living and this is an opportunity for them to have a full-time job… this our way of sharing our blessings to the community and we invite them to stop by for their destination of taste,” she added.
