Rota project workers to get federal minimum wage

Workers who will be part of two major construction projects in Rota will receive a minimum wage of $6.25 per hour, in accordance with a directive that took effect at the start of 2005.

“They will not just be paid the federal minimum wage of $5.15, but $6.25 per hour,” said Lt. Gov. Diego T. Benavente.

He represented the administration in the groundbreaking ceremonies for the $8.7-million extension of the Rota International airport and the $4.6-million renovation of the Rota Health Center.

Currently, the minimum wage rate in the Commonwealth is $3.05 per hour.

In May 2003, Gov. Juan N. Babauta issued Directive 228 requiring a $5.75 hourly wage for those working on capital improvement projects.

Babauta later amended this policy by issuing Directive 241, which raised the wage for workers on capital improvement projects to $6.25 per hour. (Agnes E. Donato)
