Sustainable life

I see a lot of news about the many environmental problems and challenges facing us in the 21st century, including pollution, climate change, and the decline and disappearance of many plants and animals.

I see a lot of news about the many environmental problems and challenges facing us in the 21st century, including pollution, climate change, and the decline and disappearance of many plants and animals. But rarely do I hear anyone mention the underlying cause of these problems: the demands of nearly 7 billion people on our planet. Too often, growth and increasing consumption are automatically treated as a good thing, no matter what the consequences are. This narrow view ignores the devastating costs associated with unsustainable growth and the very real limits of the Earth’s finite resources.

If we hope for our grandchildren to live a quality life as we do, we must begin to seriously address the need to stabilize population growth as soon as possible through education, the empowerment of women, and universal access to family planning. Instead of quantity of life we should strive for quality of life not just for us humans, but for all life on this wonderful planet we call home.
