Car catches fire on Capital Hill
A fire of still unknown cause engulfed a vehicle along the main road going up Capital Hill yesterday morning.
No one was injured or treated at the scene for medical complaints, according to Department of Fire and Emergency Medical Services spokesman Derek Gersonde yesterday.
Gersonde said DFEMS received a call about a vehicle fire on Capital Hill at 9:43am, prompting firefighters from Kagman Fire Station and Search and Rescue Unit from Garapan Fire Station to immediately respond.
Arson investigators also responded.
Gersonde said the fire was extinguished and placed under control by 9:56am.
Arson investigators determined that there was a mechanical issue with the vehicle, but they are still looking into the cause of the blaze, Gersonde said.
The DFEMS spokesman said as of yesterday they were still checking if the vehicle belonged to the Saipan Mayor’s Office.
“Updates will be released when they are available,” he said.
The report did not mention the type of the vehicle and who the operator was.
Last June 26, the burning of coconut husks as mosquito repellant caused the fire to spread to a parked van and a house’s garage in As Perdido. No one was injured.
