CHCC issues alert vs influenza-like illness

The Commonwealth Healthcare Corp. issued an alert over the weekend about an uptick in the number of cases of flu and influenza-like illness on the island for the last five weeks.

“Obviously we are hitting flu season. We would encourage each of you to be on the lookout for cases of influenza as, if caught early, Tamiflu can be an effective treatment but must be started in the first 24 to 48 hours of onset of symptoms,” said Dr. John Doyle.

All persons with influenza-like illness, or ILI, should be instructed to stay home until 24 hours after fever is resolved except for patients that require medical evaluation and care. The signs and symptoms and impact of the flu aren’t the same for every person. Typically, they start feeling sick rather suddenly from the flu. They might develop a high fever, aching muscles, sore throat, and a dry cough. They may have symptoms that can include a runny or stuffy nose, fever, headache, and muscle aches. Stomach symptoms can include nausea, vomiting, or diarrhea and are more common in children than adults. For most people, flu symptoms last a few days.

Symptomatic treatment such as Tylenol for fever, increasing fluids and bed rest are helpful.

Do not give aspirin to children with fevers or any febrile type illness as this can make them very ill. For adolescents and adults there are preparations available over the counter to help with symptoms of the flu and these can be helpful in alleviating some of the symptoms. They are not recommended for infants and young children except on the advice of one’s physician.

Hand washing and avoiding exposure to others who are ill can greatly decrease the spread of influenza.

To get vaccinated, contact the Immunization office at CHCC’s Public Health at 234-8950. (CHCC)
