CUC’s Gary Camacho resigns

Commonwealth Utilities Corp. executive director Gary P. Camacho resigned from his post yesterday, on the same day as news reports which stated that Gov. Arnold I. Palacios is determined to replace Camacho.

Camacho submitted his resignation letter to the CUC board of directors yesterday and had a meeting with several staff and other people in his office. He came out of his office at almost 6pm yesterday.

Camacho disclosed in an “ambush interview” that his resignation will take effect at the end of his contract, which is due to expire on March 26, 2023. He said he needs to take care of his health.

Camacho said he respects Palacios’ decision and wishes the corporation, its board of directors, and most importantly, the staff all the best moving forward.

Palacios recently wrote the CUC board and the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency where he expressed concern over the current leadership at CUC. The governor said his primary objective is to appoint new board members and to ensure the appointment of a new and qualified CUC executive director.

Palacios said one of CUC’s current challenges is the lack of a qualified executive director, among other issues, which is why he wants to replace Camacho.

Camacho said yesterday that he has been working with CUC for 29 or 30 years.

“I plan to continue to check my health. I’ve obviously have medical issues,” the executive director said, adding that he did address his health issues and need to continue to address it.

In February 2017, U.S. District Court for the NMI designated judge David O. Carter approved Camacho’s appointment as executive director. Carter waived the qualification requirement.

Camacho started as a procurement specialist and became manager at CUC’s Power Generation Division for several years.
