Free tennis lessons return at AMP

Posted on Oct 27 2022

Malika Miyawaki and her tennis buddies are restarting free tennis lessons beginning this Saturday, Oct. 29, at the American Memorial Park tennis courts.

The tennis clinics are open for children who have never played tennis and for those under 12 who were in the first and second classes of CNMI national coach Jeff Race’s Aces Tennis Academy.

“We want to do this because there has been a lack of opportunities to learn tennis on Saipan due to limited court availability. Therefore, although I can’t physically be there to run the free tennis clinic, some amazing high school students have volunteered to coach!” said Miyawaki in a post on social media.

The schedule for first-time players is from 10am to 11am, while those in Race’s first and second class is from 11am to 12pm.

The Emory University students and QuestBridge Scholarship beneficiary added that the clinic has rackets to lend children who have never played tennis before.

They also plan to give away a racket to participants who attend the free clinic a certain number of times. She said more details will be shared later.

The free tennis lessons will happen every Saturday at the AMP tennis courts except when there is a tennis tournament, a holiday, or bad weather.

“Everyone is welcome and I hope many kids can join because sports is a great way to meet new people and have fun, especially on a small island,” said the Saipan International School alumnae.

“Feel free to message or email me if you have any questions! You can also contact any of the high school volunteers for any questions. Lastly, please be respectful to the volunteers because it is the first time coaching for some of them and coaching is never easy,” she added.
