Governor’s Tourism Cup raises $135K

The 2nd Annual Governor’s Tourism Cup raised a total of $135,000 in cash and in-kind donations based on the final numbers tallied by the golf tournament officials.

All proceeds will be used by the Marianas Tourism Educational Council to fund its MY WAVE Club, which educates the CNMI youth on the tourism industry’s importance in the island’s economy.

MTEC board chair Vicky Benavente said their tourism education program as well as the annual tourism summit would benefit from the money collected in the one-day fundraising event.

“We will also use the money for other tourism related activities involving the MY WAVE Club. I want to reiterate that MTEC continues to make an impact in our community and truly stands by its mission to make tourism everybody’s business,” said Benavente.

“I extend my deepest appreciation to the Marianas Visitors Authority team and all our sponsors for another great tournament and turnout,” the former MVA managing director added.

A total of 144 golfers joined the double peoria format tournament held on the east course of the Laolao Bay Golf & Resort.

Meanwhile, Gov. Ralph DLG Torres said MTEC has always played a crucial role in educating the CNMI’s youth on the importance of the tourism industry to the entire community.

“One of the key goals of tourism education is articulating the role it plays in our economy’s development. For 15 years, MTEC has established tourism education and awareness in our schools, and continues to advocate for improved tourism,” the governor said.

“I commend and thank all participants and sponsors for supporting a great initiative to educate our youth and improve our economy,” Torres added.
