WASHINGTON, D.C.—Delegate Madeleine Z. Bordallo (D-GU) met with members of the Guam Association of Realtors yesterday to discuss their legislative priorities and issues important to Guam’s real estate industry. GAR members are attending the National Association of Realtors’ Legislative Meetings and Trade Expo.
GAR members discussed the importance of extending the National Flood Insurance Program through 2022 and providing protections through the Fair Housing Act from discrimination based on sexual orientation and gender identity. GAR members further discussed the importance of enacting strong net neutrality protections to ensure that the internet is an open and competitive place for consumer and businesses. Bordallo expressed her commitment to support these issues and work with her colleagues to advance these legislative policies.
“I have long supported federal legislation that promotes a strong real estate industry so that our people have access to quality and affordable housing on Guam. I appreciate the Guam Association of Realtors raising these priorities with me. Congress should work to provide the necessary protections to safeguard real property and provide fair and open internet access. It is similarly important that we enact broad non-discrimination laws that protect the rights of all Americans. I will support these policies and join my colleagues in advancing appropriate legislation in Congress.
“I also updated our realtors on my work to address Guam’s labor challenges and efforts to provide H-2B visa relief for our entire community. I noted that my provision in this year’s defense bill extends the exemption for all of Guam from the national H-2B visa cap until the end of fiscal year 2020. It would also provide flexibility for the approval of health care workers for Guam under the program. I believe this is another step in the right direction, and I am committed to securing legislation that would provide full relief for our entire community.” (PR)
