A haiku calendar for April

April Come She Will With Pollen

poetry month and April Fool’s
thirty days to read write and rhyme
at home at work and in our schools
just need to find a little more time
now we’ve passed the foolish first
April come she will with pollen
to hear fresh poems a schoolish thirst
with runny nose and eyes all swollen
in the street sweet chirping is heard
trees spread pollen through the city
sympathetic song comes from a bird
allergy problems get sneezing pity
warm winds blew a new moon last night
and darkness made the stars so bright

Spring Shout

trumpet fanfare warm wind in the air
skunk cabbage starts to sprout
hills blurry with maple buds
icicles drop with thuds
as spring gives a shout
overflowing creeks muddy for weeks
footprints fill a mud puddle
groundhogs slide along the bank
trout season opens and reels crank
as around a campfire we huddle
big garden plans and wet muddy hands
from new varieties worth trying
deer eat rhododendron buds
sparrows peck at worms and grubs
while we eat fresh dandelion
