High surf seen until Friday

A high surf advisory remains in effect until 6am Saturday and there is a high risk of rip currents through late Friday night.

Based on the information received from the National Weather Service in Guam and compiled at the CNMI Emergency Operations Center State Warning Point, large breaking waves of 9 to 11 feet are present in west facing reefs and 7 to 9 feet for south facing reefs through 6am Saturday.

This will create dangerous swimming and surfing conditions and localized beach erosion. Rip currents can sweep even the best swimmers away from shore into deeper water.

Surf will remain near these levels through tonight, then build further on Tuesday.

Inexperienced swimmers should remain out of the water due to dangerous surf conditions. The public is advised to stay out of the waters along south and west facing reefs. Swim near a lifeguard. If caught in a rip current, relax and float. Don`t swim against the current. If able, swim in a direction following the shoreline. If unable to escape, face the shore and call or wave for help. High surf seen until Friday

A long period swell generated by Typhoon Goni and a surge in the southwest monsoon will produce hazardous surf until at least Friday, according to the CNMI Emergency Operations Center yesterday.

A high surf advisory is now in effect until 6pm CHST Friday

Hazardous surf of 9 to 11 feet along west facing reefs is projected to build to hazardous levels between 7 and 9 feet on north facing reefs today, Tuesday, as swell from Typhoon Atsani begin to add to the mix.

A high surf advisory means that high surf will affect beaches in the advisory area producing localized beach erosion and dangerous swimming conditions.

The public is advised to avoid boating in these conditions. If travel by boat is necessary, exercise caution especially near reef lines and when entering or leaving harbors and inlets. Avoid venturing near exposed reefs and beaches, especially those facing north as rip currents will be life threatening. (EOC)
