Human waste litter Saipan’s beaches

The Bureau of Environmental and Coastal Quality has recently discovered that tourists have been leaving an excessive trail of feces on the shores of pristine island beaches and in popular tourists sites on Saipan.

BECQ administrator Frank Rabauliman told Saipan Tribune yesterday that the excessive amount of human waste were found when his staff was sent out to the beaches to acquire water samples. To their dismay, they discovered that within the caves and scattered along the beach shore, excessive human waste were found.

Rabauliman is certain that the waste found on the beaches belong to tourists because beaches like Saipan’s Hidden Beach and Jeffrey’s Beach are most visited by tourists. Local islanders may visit the sites but not as often as tourists.

Rabauliman was enraged by the discovery and decided that someone should be held responsible for the maintenance of popular tourist sites.

According to Rabauliman, for the past week he has been working closely with the Marianas Visitors Authority, Department of Land and Natural Resources, and the Division of Parks and Recreation to enforce the tour guide certification. Rabauliman said that this is their first step into resolving the issue.

Rabauliman said that the reason for the implementation of the tour guide certification is so that tour guides will take responsibility for the tourists that they take around the island.

Rabauliman said that before cleaning up the waste, he wants to get the certification process done and have it be made a requirement because individuals that should be the most affected by the contamination of pristine beaches are the tour guides because they make a living off of the island’s image.

Once the tour guide certification is established, a cleanup will be done to the sites that were contaminated and certified tour guides will be held responsible if it is discovered that there is a reoccurrence of human waste found on tourist sites once it has been cleaned out.

  1. Good thing wild/stray animal crap is obviously acceptable! Why don’t these popular tourist hot spots have facilities for people to take care of business? Not quite enough casino money yet to fund that or you’re worried more about the vandalism that our fine local youth would inflict on any such facilities?

    1. I knew capitol hill was full of it..i guess its overflowing.you know what they say…poop flows down hill….

    1. not a bad idea really. You have to pay for a beach badge in the states and it goes for keeping it clean….

  2. Once the tour guide certification is established, a cleanup will be done to the sites that were contaminated and certified tour guides will be held responsible if it is discovered that there is a reoccurrence of human waste found on tourist sites once it has been cleaned

What an asinine statement. Does this also go with the litter? OH wait I guess it does as usually this is picked up by volunteer groups.
So just what does this incompetent agency actually do beside take water samples?

So take samples and send them for DNA testing to see what nationality this excrement belongs too.

    1. well they do Red Flag beaches so they know where the poop comes from……..Back when we had the typhoon, there were poop nuggets on every beach. was that the tourists fault too ? put porta potty’s out there and put coaching staff in place to monitor.

  3. The feces needs to be tested to be certain if it’s tourists or locals. We must know! If it’s locals poop then it has cultural value and must be honored.

  4. been there and nothing. So i have to ask if everyone agrees to blame the tourist, which it may be, then why, at these remote beaches, has no government agency placed porta potty’s at them ?

  5. Well, it looks like upon entry to the CNMI, not only the Bio metrics must be taken but it is not required to do a poop o metrics. Any recent deposited poop could then be taken to the poop o metrics station and the pooper could be quickly identified.
We could even charge a $10.00 poop o metrics charge to fund the poop removal effort along the beaches and everywhere else. Unless the individual accused of the poop violation can prove it was not preventable, a stiff fine should be imposed. Additionally, community service to include poop patrol. The pooper would also be required to wear a diaper any time this individual in not in a facility, hotel, etc that has approved poop deposit systems.

  6. …Am I reading this right? They will leave the poop on the beach until the tour guide certification is completed? OMG that could be months. So now the tour guides will be blamed…hmmmm…talk about passing the buck. If I were the tour company I would sue the government for allowing tourists to enter the commonwealth in the first place, since it has been determined they are trashing the beaches. That statement makes no sense right ? neither does the governments solution to the problem. Typical action, make someone else responsible, take no responsibility yourselves. Perfect.
