Mariana Islands Nature Alliance announced yesterday its recipients of its 2020 Green Awards, which recognize a business, school, and individual that exemplifies environmental stewardship and helps to advance MINA’s mission of “Empowering Communities for Conservation.”
The 2020 Green Business of the Year Award was given to The Shack for their commitment to conservation and incorporating the green business culture throughout its entire company. The Shack implemented a sustainable takeout packaging program, reducing waste for over four years by transitioning from styrofoam containers for takeout orders to environmentally friendly, 100% compostable, and 100% plant-based containers. The Shack was one of the first restaurants on Saipan to give these sustainable options to their customers while also serving bamboo straws to their dine-in customers.
Dandan Middle School was selected to receive the 2020 Environmental Heroes Award for their dedication to the environment and work to protecting our natural resources. Through countless hours of volunteering at beach cleanups, educating their peers, families and neighbors, maintaining their campus garden and leading the way in sustainable practices, the students of DMS are true environmental heroes.
The 2020 Environmental Champion Award went to the CNMI’s first Miss Earth, Leisha Deleon Guerrero, who demonstrates an extraordinary commitment to the environment and conservation of our natural resources. She has devoted tireless individual effort and inspires leadership to promote environmental responsibility and sustainability at work and in the local community.
