The Marianas Tourism Education Council reconvened on May 27, 2021, setting activities for the coming year in support of its continuing goal of educating the community about the Marianas’ primary economic driver.

“Although many of our activities have been suspended for over a year due to COVID-19, MTEC is hitting the ground running in its planning for the year ahead,” said acting MTEC chair Vicky Benavente.

The Governor’s Golf Classic benefitting MTEC will be held on Sept. 4, 2021, at Laolao Bay Golf & Resort.

A meeting with MY WAVE Club advisers will be held early in the school year to acquaint them with MTEC and upcoming events.

Education outreach presentations to local schools will be conducted with 10th graders in the new school year, and MTEC’s annual tourism summit for students will be scheduled as well. MTEC also anticipates to again make its annual scholarship for graduating high school seniors available next school year.

2022 will also mark the 20th anniversary of MTEC. MTEC was formed in 2002 to heighten the community’s awareness of the importance of tourism to the well-being of the people of The Marianas. MTEC’s stated mission is three-fold: to foster community understanding and support of the visitor industry; to educate the public, especially school students, about the value, social benefits, and economic contributions made to the community by the visitor industry; and to instill, improve, and promote the “Hafa Ada -Tirow” hospitality spirit throughout the island community.

In addition to Benavente, MTEC board members include Priscilla M. Iakopo (Marianas Visitors Authority), Martin Duenas (MVA), Frankie Eliptico (Northern Marianas College), Larry Lee, Naomi Nishimura (CNMI Public School System), Gordon Marciano (Pacific Development Inc.), Catherine Perry (Integrity Communications), and Glenn Policare (Kanoa Resort).
