Ol’Aces, Genesis All-Stars pounce on foes

The Ol’Aces rolled to their fourth straight win, while the Genesis All-Stars got their first victory in the 2018 MIBF Island-wide Basketball League last Friday night at the Gilbert C. Ada Gymnasium.

A 109-72 rout of the 670 Akkeri in the curtain-raiser in the men’s division gave the league-leading Ol’Aces a 4-0 record, while the Genesis All-Stars recovered from a 0-2 start following a similar easy win over the Saints in the second match, 87-69.

The Ol’Aces’ high-powered offense for the nth time was too much to handle for the 670 Akkeri, which faced an early double-digit deficit right after the first quarter. Preston Basa knocked in three triples late in the first period, while Douglas Schmidt provided the early spark for the Ol’Aces to lift their team to a 28-14 advantage.

The Ol’Aces went on to pad their lead as the one-sided match progressed with Freddie Pelisamen, Dan Barcinas, and Marvin Rabauliman also hitting their targets to join Schmidt and Basa on the list of Ol’Aces players who finished the game in double figures. Schmidt tallied 18 points, while Pelisamen chipped in 16, and Basa, Barcinas, and Rabauliman logged 15, 13, and 12, respectively. Dixon Kwon led the winless 670 Akkeri (0-2) with his 18 markers.

In the second game the Genesis All-Stars also jumped the gun on the Saints to cruise to victory.

The Genesis All-Stars built a 20-9 lead behind its balance offense, while the Saints struggled early after making only four field goals in the first frame.

The Saints never recovered from thereon to drop to a 0-3 record.
