Not ready for your misguided orthography. It’s a combination of phonetics and orthography the latter based on Spanish. Making sense? No wonder your Cha`mu is confused.
And “misguided”?
What part of me trying to clear up an on-going issue in the Chamorro language is “misguided”?
Trying to bring the Chamorro people together under a unified & mutually accepted language is “misguided”?
This may be hard to accept, but the Chamorro language is DYING. People like myself are trying to revitalize dying languages & cultures in the only script we ever know intimately, the script being Latin, so that future generations of Chamorro people can learn their native tongues.
Look around the CNMI. What languages do you hear from my generation when they speak to their children? It’s OVERWHELMINGLY English. Compare that with the older generation speaking to yours – OVERWHELMINGLY Chamorro. At the very least, Guam is doing their best to bring back what they believe to be the Chamorro language & culture. They have resorted to apps, websites, television shows, YouTube channels, and anything else they can think of to teach the Chamorro language & culture. What do we have in the CNMI? An outdated dictionary (no definitions, just synonyms) from a highly respected linguist, the late Donald M. Topping, that doesn’t even use “ñg” or “ñk”. Other than that, it’s all verbal.
But by all means, if you have a better idea, then I’m all ears – or eyes, in this case.

Actually, we BOTH have the same orthography. The CNMI Chamorros seem to ignore it because it came from Guam.
Recent example – I asked a friend of mine’s uncle why he spelled it “Muna” instead of “Muña”. He said “because the Guamanians use that letter”. I asked another friend why there are two different spellings for one family – Taisakan/Taisacan. In the Chamorro alphabet, we do not have a standalone “C” (although, we do have “Ch”), yet it is commonly used in this ethnically Chamorro surname.
I recall hearing from an instructor that the reason why many of the older Guamanian Chamorros dislike the CNMI Chamorros is due to the fact that we tried to convince them to join “peacefully” under the Japanese empire or die. Our reason for disliking the Guamanians, I’m told, is because they voted “no” on the 1968 reunification referendum.
Lastly, my source is Siñot Donald Mendiola of Hopwood. He, himself, uses the modern orthography, in addition to the ancient words & numbering system – which is certainly more than I can say for most speakers of Modern Chamorro.
For goodness sake, even the Americans were able to bury the hatchet with the British, the Confederacy, and the Japanese. Why can’t we?
