Public servants recognized

Members of the CNMI public service sector were recognized last Tuesday afternoon at the Office of the Governor’s conference room on Capital Hill with the signing of a proclamation designating the week of May 5-11, 2019, as Public Service Recognition Week.

Gov. Ralph DLG Torres said the occasion honors the “unsung heroes” who keep the Commonwealth government chugging along.

“Public employees take not only jobs, but oaths to perform their jobs to the best of their abilities,” the proclamation noted.

Public servants include military reserve personnel, police officers, firefighters, corrections officers, customs and conservation officers, doctors, nurses, health care professionals and others who risk their lives for others on a daily basis, along with teachers, social workers, administrators, computer technicians, laborers, and may more occupations.

Office of Personnel Management director Isidro K. Seman noted that while tourism drives the CNMI economy, the efforts of the public service workforce should not be forgotten.

“…Tourism is the driving force [of the CNMI], but without the workforce, that driving force is nothing,” he said. “We are here to celebrate each and every [public servant]. Today is your day.”

“…Every occupation out there is needed…whether you are a gardener, carpenter, teacher, nurse, or elected official,” said Torres in a short speech before congratulating government employees.

Torres noted that Lt. Gov. Arnold I. Palacios would be making the rounds to greet government employees in each department.

“I am looking forward to celebrating public service recognition, and I appreciate all the hard work that [the public servants] have been doing,” said Saipan Mayor David M. Apatang.
