The return of 5-on-5 basketball was heralded in big way last Saturday when the Inaugural SCLC Basketball League held its opening ceremony at the Gillette Multi-Purpose Gymnasium in Gualo Rai.

Organizers behind the league didn’t pull any punches in the much ballyhooed program that opened with a dance number from Saipan Music and Dance Studio dancers and followed by team parades for both the open and masters divisions.

Saipan Centennial Lions Club president Marie Javier also took care of the welcome message where she thanked everyone who made the league’s opening ceremony a success.

The opening ceremony was then capped off by the selection of the best muse which went to Marianas Dental Clinic’s Shaine Solomon, a 22-year-old who works at the company.

League co-coordinators Mikee Guirey and Boy Garcia extended their gratitude to SCLC, Tan Sui Lin Foundation, PC Bargain, Daniel’s, BES House of Chicken, Puerto Rico Bento, SM, SMADS, Saipan Ice and Water Co., Villa Luna, Eagle Construction, and RHF Marketing Services for making the league possible.

In all 20 teams are entered in the league—14 in the open category and six in the masters.

The Game and NAPA Auto drew first blood after they beat Lakay Islanders and DECM in the open and masters divisions, respectively, last Saturday.

The league resumes today with Marianas Warriors taking on Paradise Realty in the first game. It will be followed by 670 Gravity against HBR Construction. The third game will then pit Vizion Insurance versus JTM.

Friday’s triple-header will start with action between BluHaus and Supertech UFO followed by the Marianas Dental Clinic-RNV Construction match. IT’&E will then tangle with DECM in the finale.

After giving way to open teams, the island’s oldies but goodies will see action on Saturday with Blu Haus squaring off against NAPA Auto in the opener. The second game will have Blue Eagles Construction going up against Magalahi Eagles with the DECM-Marianas Dental Clinic game capping the weekend slate.
