The 25th Annual Tom Picarro Memorial Fun Run will be held on June 16 with a 5am show time and 6am start.
Known as the Silver Streak, the event is a 7K run/walk (4.2miles) which starts and finishes in front of the T Galleria’s main entrance fronting Beach Road. The turnaround is at the Quarter Master intersection at the Tank.
The Silver Streak Run will have seven categories: Under 12; Under 19; 20-29; 30-39; 40-49; 50-59, and 60 above for both male and female and overall finisher.
Registration forms are available at T Galleria from 10:30am to 10:30pm at the Concierge. Registration fee is $10 with great raffle prizes and a commemorative T-shirt for the first 200 finishers.
The fun run started 25 years ago to honor the memory of former DFS Saipan president Tom Picarro, who died on June 18, 1993. He was an avid jogger and jogged along Beach Road for many years, becoming a regular sight against the Saipan sunset to commuters going home from work.
In his time with DFS Saipan, Picarro saw DFS Saipan through economic good times during the Japanese tourist boom. He was very active in the business community, serving as past president of the Saipan Chamber of Commerce and on the board of the Marianas Visitors Bureau, the predecessor of the Marianas Visitors Authority and other governmental task forces and commissions. Picarro made contributions to the Catholic Church and throughout the years, proceeds of the Silver Streak Run had gone to local Catholic Church charitable organizations.
DFS will retire the Silver Streak on this 25th anniversary and proceeds from the run will go to the Maturana House of Prayer. Eleven members of Picarro’s family from New York and Florida will be present in this Saturday’s event. (PR)
