The University of Guam’s Triton Esports program will hold tryouts next month for their League of Legends, Super Smash Bros. Ultimate (SSBU), and Valorant team rosters. Tryouts are open to all UOG students interested in esports and competing in local and national tournaments.
Launched in February 2020, Triton Esports is Guam’s first-ever collegiate esports team. Triton Esports exists to mold professional leaders through rigorous training, coaching, and mentorship. Students who join the team will be awarded a $500 scholarship for their time and commitment.
“Joining the Triton team gave me the opportunity to competitively play the game I love and improve my gaming skills. I enjoy being on the team because of the camaraderie we built and the bonds I have developed with my teammates,” said Ronee “CAPSTWO” Pangilinan, Triton Esports SSBU team captain.
The program is also excited to introduce Valorant to the Triton Esports lineup, which will give first-person shooter (FPS) fans an outlet to showcase their skills and talent. Coaching the Valorant team is UOG student Willy “LEVERAGE” Hong, whose success in the game earned him Immortal rank and placed him in the top 1% of players in North America.
“Valorant right now is the best FPS game to play. I’m excited to bring a Valorant team to UOG and show other colleges stateside, and even in Asia, what our team is made of,” Hong said. “UOG is still in search of a tournament win, and I’m hoping our Valorant team will be the one to bring it home.”
Tryouts are set for:
• League of Legends: Aug. 10 and 12 via the UOG Triton Esports Discord (Online)
• Super Smash Bros. Ultimate: Aug. 10 and 12 at the UOG Office of Information Technology
• Valorant: Aug. 10 and 12 via the UOG Triton Esports Discord (Online)
The tryouts will be streamed live on Twitch with local shoutcasters providing commentaries on the matches. The stream will highlight live in-game footage from League of Legends, SSBU, and Valorant as the matches progress, allowing fans to view the best action during tryouts.
