A developing tropical disturbance centered about 90 miles north of Agrihan will bring numerous heavy showers in the CNMI through Wednesday.

The U.S. National Weather Service in Guam issued a small craft advisory yesterday due to the tropical disturbance.

Five male teenagers were stranded on Goat Island.

In coordination with the CNMI Homeland Security and Emergency Management Office, a U.S. Navy helicopter picked up the stranded students from Goat Island and airlifted them back to Tinian yesterday morning.

Saipan Tribune confirmed with the Tinian Department of Public Safety that they received information yesterday at 8am that five students were stranded on Goat Island and could not be picked up by boat because of the small craft warning.

The Homeland Security and Emergency Management Office then coordinated with the U.S. Coast Guard and the U.S. Navy for the rescue.

According to the U.S. National Weather Service, the tropical disturbance will gradually drift northward this afternoon, Tuesday.

Converging strong winds south of the tropical disturbance’s center will continue to trigger numerous heavy showers, isolated thunderstorms, and locally heavy downpours through Wednesday.

“If you are planning any outdoor activities through Wednesday, be alert for hazardous weather and aware of current conditions and be prepared to move indoors,” NWS said in a statement.

NWS said mariners operating small vessels should be prepared for strong winds and choppy seas.

“Beach goers and swimmers should stay close to shore and immediately move indoors if lightning is present,” NWS said.
