Woman killed after being hit by van

A 48-year-old Filipino died after being hit by a van early yesterday morning in Dandan.

The Department of Public Safety reported that at about 5:20am yesterday, police responded to an auto-pedestrian accident along Chalan Msgr. Guerrero in Dandan. The accident occurred on the eastbound lane in front of the Twin’s Super Market.

The victim, a Filipina, age 48, sustained several severe injuries and was brought to Commonwealth Health Center emergency room for treatment. She was pronounced dead by an attending doctor at 5:35am.

The driver of a 2016 white Honda Odyssey was heading east on the outer lane driving at a speed of approximately 35 to 40 miles per hour when the victim entered the street.

The driver said he did not see the victim who was not in a designated crosswalk until a passenger in the car he was driving yelled “people!”

By the time he reacted, it was too late as his car already collided with the victim.

The accident is still under investigation and investigating officers have ruled out alcohol as a determining factor in the case.

  1. Unfortunately, most likely wearing dark clothes during dark hours and in the middle of the road. This is quite common with Filipino and Chinese at all hours, even when there is a sidewalk. I see it every time I travel to those countries and also on a daily basis in the NMI on all islands.

  2. Several news reporting agencies gave some details, that if accurate raise questions that should, and again I say should be questions the police should be following up on. Yes I have credentials that qualify me to state these points. One piece of information stated that the driver was going between 35-40 miles an hour. This brings up the question how fast was the driver going? If the driver can not determine his speed this brings to question weather or not he is in control of his vehicle. Another bit of info was the passanger stated he yelled out “people” just before the accident. This indicates that the driver was not watching the road. Period. What was the driver doing? Probably texting or some other activity that caused him not to be aware of the road ahead. Trust me i lived in that area once and unless you are driving with your eyes closed you can see if someone is crossing that road in front of the Twins store. Dark or not. This hopefully is being investigated by the police. We can only hope. My prayers are with the woman’s surviving family. Such a careless waste of human life.
