WSR student reports false kidnapping

A fourth-grade student from William S. Reyes Elementary School alerted authorities last Thursday of an attempted kidnapping that turned out to be false.

Community members took to social media over the weekend to warn others about an alleged near-kidnapping incident at the WSR campus involving a fourth grader.

The Department of Public Safety responded to the incident and found that the fourth grader had been making up the story the entire time.

According to a report from DPS, officers responded last Thursday, Aug. 30, at approximately 9:17am, to a call regarding an attempted kidnapping at the WSR school in Chalan Kanoa.

Once at the scene, officers spoke to the alleged victim, a male fourth grade student, who said he was dropped off at school around 8am. According to the alleged victim, while walking to class, he noticed a man seated by the entrance of the eastern gate. He said the suspect was wearing dark pants, a dark shirt with a hood over his head, a cloth covering the bottom portion of his face, a pair of sunglasses, and a black hat with the letters “CNMI” printed in blue.

The alleged victim said the suspect followed him as he walked to class until he went inside the restroom. He said that the suspect waited outside the restroom, and grabbed him when he walked out.

The victim told police that he fought back as the suspect pulled him by his left arm, and once he broke free, he ran to class, and reported the incident to his teacher.

DPS officers immediately launched an investigation in an effort to locate the suspect but they discovered several inconsistencies in the victim’s statement.

When investigators questioned the student again, he confessed there was no attempted kidnapping and that he made up the story.
