Masters bowling tourney this Memorial Day weekend
The biggest tenpin bowling tournament of the year on Saipan returns, as the 22nd staging of the CNMI May Masters Bowling Tournament will be held this Memorial Day weekend from May 28 to 30 at the Saipan Bowling Center in Oleai.
The mid-year tenpin bowling tournament includes four bowling events: Singles, doubles, team of four bowlers, and masters—with each event offering separate sets of prizes.
To qualify for the masters event, a bowler needs to compete in the singles, doubles, and team events and must be among the top 36 bowlers among the men and top 24 among the women based on total pinfalls.
The men’s masters will be made up of a total of 16 games, while the women’s masters will have 12 games with the top scorers from each division to be declared as the 2004 CNMI Masters Champions.
Trophies and cash awards totaling over $6,000 await the winners of the year’s biggest local bowling tournament. The men and women masters champions are guaranteed $1,000 and $300, respectively, in cash prizes.
Last year’s masters champions, Joey Miranda III of Guam and Emi Williams of Saipan, will be defending their titles. Miranda bagged the championship of the men’s masters division after knocking down 3,036 pins in their grueling 16-game series, while Williams took home the women’s title after bowling a score of 2,102 pinfalls in their own 12-game series.
Saipan bowlers sharpened their teeth for this year’s May Masters by playing in the monthly Pepsi King of the Lanes Tournament, which has provided them with plenty of practice the past five months. The organizers also expect a large contingent of good bowlers from Guam this year.
The yearly May Masters tournament is organized by the Saipan Bowling Association and is sponsored by MARPAC, exclusive distributor of Budweiser; JET Holdings; Saipan Bowling Center; Micronesian Brokers, Inc.; Marianas Visitors Authority; SBA president Jerry Tan; Dai-Ichi Saipan Beach Hotel; and AON Insurance.
