Sparked by his recent victory in the CNMI May Masters Tenpin Bowling Tournament, Mark Halstead was able to extend his lead in the Bowling Ranking System.

The Shark nearly doubled the score of second placer and youth bowler Raymond Zapanta after he earned a total of 395 points in the tournament held last May 25-27 at the Saipan Bowling Center. Halstead is currently in front with 827 to Zapanta’s 454 points.

He got 85 points after finishing second to good friend Jonathan Hensley in the all events and got another 110 points following strong performances in the singles, doubles and team events. He then got a whopping 200 points when he bested 35 other bowlers in the elite masters tilt held in the final day of competition.

Zapanta, for his part, has lot to be happy about after jumping from fourth to second in the bowling standings. He did so in large part with his runner-up finish in last month’s Pepsi King of the Lanes Tournament. He also earned 40 points in the masters and 30 points from the team events.

Simon Manacop, a former youth bowler, slipped to third place in the BRS a few points behind Zapanta with 432 points. He got 35 points in the May King of the Lanes and another 70 in the masters.

Hensley recorded the highest jump in the rankings and is now in fourth place with 417 points. The youth bowler, who rolled a perfect score earlier this year, was good for only 82 points at the end of May but had a sterling run in the May Masters.

He accumulated 335 during the three-day tournament where he topped the all events and placed second to Hasltead in the masters.

Alex Cacdac is in fifth place in the rankings with 394 points. Like Hensley, Cacdac was also on the outside looking in before making his mark in the Pepsi and May Masters tournaments last month.

The rest of the players in the top 10, with their corresponding scores in parenthesis, are as follows: Dannie Robles (363 points); Ruselle Zapanta (362 points); Robert Talavera (355 points); Paul Pangelinan (350 points); and Michael Guirey (305 points).

Falling from the top 10 are keglers Ador Dimaano (from fifth to 12th) and Jonathan Eparwa (from 10th to 14th).

Unlike the men BRS, the standings for the women wasn’t shaken up with Diane Camacho retaining the lead followed by Emi Williams and Rebecca Reyes.

Set up by the Saipan Bowling Association, the BRS determines who would qualify in the yearend 2004 Pepsi King of the Lanes Tournament.
