GOP calls for economic policies to revive Tinian’s tourism industry

The CNMI Republican Party is calling for sound economic policies to revive the tourism industry on Tinian and its efforts have been joined by Rep. Patrick H. San Nicolas (R-Tinian).

San Nicolas has announced that he is joining CNMI Republican Party president Diego T. Benavente in advocating for sound economic policies aimed at reviving the CNMI tourism industry.

San Nicolas, an incumbent representative from Precinct 6, is running for reelection in the 2024 general elections under the CNMI Republican Party banner.

“I am deeply committed to answering president Benavente’s call to implement sound economic policies that will revive and bolster our tourism industry,” said San Nicolas.

“Our community depends heavily on tourism, and it is crucial that we develop strategies to attract visitors from diverse markets and stimulate economic growth,” he added.

Having served two terms in the House of Representatives, San Nicolas has been a dedicated advocate for the needs of his constituents. He emphasizes the importance of revitalizing the tourism industry, which has faced significant challenges, particularly due to the decline in visitors from China.

Because of this, San Nicolas supports Benavente’s vision for a robust and thriving tourism sector, recognizing its vital role in the overall economic health of the Commonwealth.

“Tourism is the lifeblood of our economy, and by focusing on sustainable and innovative policies, we can ensure long-term prosperity for our islands,” he said.

San Nicolas said in relation to the CNMI Republican Party’s efforts, he supports Commonwealth Ports Authority’s request for an exemption from the U.S. Department of Transportation’s China Order Part 213.

“The DOT exemption is crucial for the Northern Mariana Islands to regain access to the Chinese tourism market, a vital component of the CNMI’s economy,” he said.

San Nicolas said he also supports the implementation of the CNMI EVS-TAP program which would allow pre-screened travelers from China to visit the CNMI without a visa under certain conditions, further facilitating the return of Chinese tourists.

In addition, San Nicolas endorses federal efforts to lower the cost of domestic air travel between Guam and the CNMI by creating a special cabotage exemption for foreign carriers.

This measure is expected to make travel more affordable and accessible, benefiting both residents and tourists.

In addition to tourism, San Nicolas remains dedicated to addressing the needs of small businesses and struggling residents.

“Fostering a supportive environment for small businesses and providing relief to those most in need are essential components of our economic strategy. Together, we can create a stronger, more resilient Commonwealth,” he said.

San Nicolas expressed his enthusiasm for continuing to serve Precinct 6 and collaborating with Benavente and fellow party members to achieve their shared goals.

“I am inspired by president Benavente’s leadership and vision, and I am eager to work with him to make a meaningful difference in the lives of our constituents,” he said.
