Lady Dolphins drown Lady Rays in girls v-ball

Marianas High School Lady Dolphins got back into winning form as they drowned Saipan Southern High School Lady Manta Rays in the continuation of the NMIVA-PSS Interscholastic Girls High School Volleyball League 2024-2025 at the Marianas High School Gymnasium last Tuesday.

After their only loss so far of the season against Mount Carmel School last Oct. 1, the Lady Dolphins put their game face on and won their next three straight games.

In their game against the Lady Rays, the Lady Dolphins took their momentum and turned it into their fourth win of the season after crushing them in two straight sets, 21-11, 21-12.

The second set came and went as swiftly as the first—but not without some fight from the Lady Rays.

The Lady Rays were down, 2-6 in the first, but with the help of transfer student and multi-sport athlete Azriel Fatialofa, they caught up, 11-17. However, spunky and fast Erika Zandueta of MHS made point-saving plays and blocks that gave them the advantage and the eventual first set win.

The Lady Dolphins then opened up the second set with back-to-back points from unhittable serves by Rizza Relucio to make it 4-1—then left the Lady Rays reeling as they left them behind, 8-1. Finally, a point was made by the Lady Rays, but by then MHS was up, 12-2.

Great serves by MHS’ rotation solidified their second set assault of points until finally, the Lady Rays were in possession after a long rally, 3-16. Zoe Lee then worked to get the Lady Rays out of the trenches with unreturnable serves, and soon, it was 6-16. However, MHS’ defense still held steadfast and despite their effort, the Lady Rays stagnated at 12 points, 21-12.

With Fatialofa and Lee in SSHS’ roster are Mai Peters, Martha Cabrera, Angel Calage, Ha’ani Passi, Kiara Tabora, Kaydence Gillespie, and Joselyn Atalig.

In other results that night, Kagman High School Ayuyus II beat Saipan International School Lady Geckos II, 21-6, 21-18; SIS survived Mount Carmel School Knights after three tough sets, 16-21, 21-8, 15-12; and Grace Christian Academy Lady Eagles took down Agape Christian School Torchbearers, 21-10, 21-18.

In the standings, MHS leads with their 4-1 record; GCA is at 3-2; MCS has an even 3-3 record; and SIS, KHS, ACS, and SSHS are all at 2-3; and

Next Tuesday, Oct. 15, is the last day of regular season games, with the championship series set for Oct. 23-25.
