The Commonwealth Healthcare Corp.’s Community Guidance Center recently linked up with Dandan Middle School’s Youth Advisory Panel to spread awareness about healthy coping strategies, suicide prevention, and general knowledge about maintaining one’s mental health.

The presentation, which was held last Monday, March 1, featured CGC’s Mia Jones, Lei Iguel, and Elora Masga sharing information on behavioral health topics that are a concern among students.

These efforts were conducted in preparation for the Youth Advisory Panel’s school-wide two-day workshop, which will be led by the student leaders.

Part of the presentation included an introduction on suicide prevention and a discussion on prevention strategies and referral services. The students also worked on goal-setting and identified healthy coping strategies.

They also participated in a presentation about depression and anxiety, as well as the difference between healthy and unhealthy coping. Both topics were paired with engaging activities that taught the students about signs and symptoms, risk and protective factors, and ways to get help. They then had a question-and-answer segment, followed by guidance on how to convey what they learned during the two-day workshop that is scheduled next month.

The Dandan Middle School’s Youth Advisory Panel consists of eight student leaders and three AmeriCorps students.
