CW issue and the US military

Given the military’s push for Marines slated to be stationed in Guam to conduct highly destructive live-fire training on Tinian and Pågan, it smells fishy when a high-ranking military official responsible for implementing that basing decision offers the military’s help on the CNMI’s workforce issues (http://www.mvariety.com/cnmi/cnmi-news/local/99739-dod-to-help-nmi-address-workforce-issues). One has to wonder why the military would insert itself in this issue.

To the extent that the military’s offer simply reflects an understanding that keeping our islands’ economy stable and strong promotes national security, we appreciate the assistance.

If, however, the military is trying to leverage its cooperation on the CW issue into concessions from CNMI officials who have opposed the military’s proposed buildup, we urge our leaders to stand firm and reject any attempts to hold our economy hostage. Sacrificing our homelands on Tinian and Pågan to destruction under the military’s bombs, artillery, and mortars is not worth 30 pieces of silver.

  1. Maybe we can hire China to protect us “From China” and their bastard children in N. Korea? The CW Program is history and the military build up is not going anywhere. We may as well take advantage of any offers from the military we can while we can.

  2. This group needs to stop personally writing to the editor. The letter is difficult to read. Maybe, hire a writer to express your concerns.
