The public should be aware that there are still a lot of live vintage bombs on Saipan that are located mostly at construction sites, according to police Sgt. Anthony Macaranas.

Macaranas, coordinator of the Department of Public Safety’s Explosive Response Team, told Saipan Tribune that they are advising the people that whenever they find live ordnance either around their house or inside the jungle to please call them at 664-9001 or 2.

“The tips are you identify, you mark it (ordnance) and make a call and we will come there and pick it up,” Macaranas said.

The officer asked the people not to play around with it.

“Don’t touch it, don’t even try and do anything. Just make sure that it is placed where it is safe and properly secured so we can come over and take it away and secured it away from the community where we have a date to detonate it,” he said.

Macaranas said there are still more live World War II bombs on the island that’s why they need community’s help to give them a call.

“It’s either Word War II (bombs) or something that is out of ordinary that you think that is dangerous… give us a call and we take care of it,” he said.

EXRT consists of13 police officers, including Macaranas, who are mainly trained to handle munitions. The team transports ordnance from the location where they are found and secures them in a bunker in Marpi.

The team will then select a day for the bombs’ detonation to get rid of them.
