Survey on for potential underground leak sites
The Division of Environmental Quality is conducting a site survey and inventory to identify potential sources of contamination from leaking underground storage tanks on Saipan, Tinian and Rota.
These tanks may have been used for the storage of fuels, such as gasoline, diesel or aviation fuel, or other regulated substances, including used oil.
Potential sites that DEQ is interested in are former gasoline stations or other fuel dispensing facilities or installations that used underground tanks to store fuel or regulated substances. Such sites may have been abandoned or redeveloped years ago.
“The purpose of this inventory and survey is to identify such sites and make certain that any source of contamination is addressed,” said DEQ’s Reina Camacho in a recent e-mail.
Duenas & Associates Inc. is under contract with the DEQ to conduct this site survey and inventory.
“This survey will be used to obtain necessary resources to address, and ultimately close, such sites in an environmentally responsible manner,” she added.
During the course of this survey, D&A will review existing documentations, inclusive of but not limited to past property and site maps, aerial photography, fire department records and underground storage tank records.
DEQ and D&A will be hosting a series of public meetings to inform the community of the organization’s intentions.
