The emergency shutdown of two power engines at Power Plant 1 in Lower Base triggered outages in some areas on Saipan Tuesday.

Commonwealth Utilities Corp. executive director Antonio Muña said yesterday that due to the emergency shutdown, CUC was unable to temporarily generate adequate electrical power to meet the island demand.

Muna said that on Tuesday at 1am power engine no. 3 at Power Plant 1 was shut down for emergency repairs on cylinder head no. 12 due to a damaged exhaust valve. He said the mechanical repair was completed at 5pm that day.

Power engine no. 6, on the other hand, was shut down Friday for emergency repair on the turbocharger support. Repair work was completed Tuesday at 5:30pm.

Muna said the high temperature also contributed to the difficulties as the high peak demand exceeded the available generation.

The CUC official said the problems affected the power supply at Feeder 1 or the areas in Upper Miha, Duty Free lateral and upper Chinatown lateral from 11:30am to 1:07pm.

Also affected was the power supply at Feeder 2 or the areas at Tony Roma’s Restaurant to Microl-Intersection in San Jose from 12:52pm to 1:56pm.

“CUC apologizes for any inconvenience this emergency outage schedule has imposed on the community and will work diligently to minimize the interruption,” Muña said.
