The Northern Mariana Islands Volleyball Association will conclude the 2008 season with the 2nd Annual Reverse Co-ed Grass Volleyball Tournament.

The reverse co-ed tournament, which will be held this Saturday at Navy Hill’s baseball field, is a unique one as it is played on a female’s height net and male participants cannot spike the ball inside the 10-foot line.

Registration fee is $10 per player for NMIFA members and $15 for non-members. The tournament will start at 9am and is expected to finish before 6pm.

For more information, call Russ Quinn at 287-0318 or Mark McDonald at 484-5133.

The inaugural reverse co-ed grass volleyball tournament was held last year with the duo of Randy Steele and E.J. Lee besting 14 other pairs for the title.

Last year’s tournament started with three pools of five playing a round-robin format to determine the seeding for the double-elimination play.

Dale Roberts and Heather Kennedy went undefeated in four games and earned the first seed. Two other pairs were unbeaten and were seeded in the playoffs. McDonald and Linda Anastacio-Roberts were the No. 2 seed, while Steele and Lee were seeded third.

The Top 3 seeded pairs and three other teams played in a double-elimination playoffs with the duo of Lee and Steele finishing first and claiming the first finals ticket. The rest of the field battled for the remaining finals seat.

Nina Mosley and Marino Pungilug set a title match with Lee and Steele after downing Roberts and Kennedy in the semifinals.

In the finals, the duo of Mosley and Pungilug must beat the tandem of Lee and Steele twice to steal the title.

Pungilug and Mosley moved half step away from completing their mission when they won the first game, 15-11. But fatigue finally caught Mosley and Pungilug in the second game allowing Steele and Lee to pull off a 15-13 triumph.
