The federal Office of Personnel Management is proposing to reduce the cost-of-living allowance for parts of Hawaii, Guam and the Northern Mariana Islands.

Under the proposal published Tuesday in a Federal Register notice, OPM wants to reduce COLA by 1 percentage point each.

The COLA for the Hawaiian counties of Honolulu, Kauai, Maui and Kalawao would drop from 25 percent to 24 percent, as would the COLA for Guam and the Northern Mariana Islands. The COLA for Hawaii County would drop from 18 to 17 percent.

The notice does not say when the changes will be implemented. OPM will accept comments until Feb. 9.

OPM based its reductions on changes in the relative cost of living for the areas when compared with Washington, D.C. (PR)
