The Saipan and Northern Islands Municipal Council has urged the Senate Committee on Resources, Economic, Development and Programs and the Northern Islands Legislative Delegation to endorse and support a proposed initiative seeking to transfer a percentage of fees collected from poker machines to the municipal council.

Introduced by Rep. Jesus T. Attao, House bill 12-17 seeks to appropriate some $376,000 in fees collected from Saipan Local Law 11-2 (poker machines) for the Mayor of Saipan and the Sixth Saipan and Northern Islands Municipal Council.

According to Chair Gregorio V. Deleon Guerrero and Vice Chair David A. Indalecio, $76,000 out of the $376,000 has been reserved for the council’s personnel and operational costs.

“The proposed financial assistance of $76,000 under this local act will tremendously supplement our sufficient level of $178, 552 under continuing resolution,” said the council members.

They added the additional funding will strengthen the council’s commitment for a successful and effective municipal leadership.

In a signed resolution this week, council members also recognized and commended the Saipan and Northern Islands Legislative Delegation under Sen. Pete P. Reyes for endorsing and supporting the council. (MM)
