Mark “The Shark” Halstead tries to live up to high expectations demanded from this year’s runaway winner of the Saipan Bowling Association’s Bowling Ranking System when he tangles today with 23 other keglers for the season-ending 2004 Pepsi King of the Lanes Tenpin Bowling Tournament at the Saipan Bowling Center.

This morning’s competition begins with registration at 9:45am with the nine-game roll-off set to commence 15 minutes later at 10am.

At the end of the roll-off, the Top 6 bowlers advance to the stepladder second phase, where the Top 2 bowlers after the roll-off get a bye, the third-ranked bowler challenges the sixth-ranked bowler in Game 1, and No. 4 challenges No. 5 in Game 2.

In the semifinals, the Game 1 winner will play the bowler that topped the roll-off and the Game 2 winner will go up against the second-ranked bowler. The winners of the two head-to-head matches then square off in the championship game.

Aside from Halstead, the other Top 12 bowlers for 2004 based on the BRS are brothers Raymond and Ruselle Zapanta, Simon Manacop, Dannie Robles, Paul Pangelinan, Ronald Epan, Ador Dimaano, Arnel Del Rosario, Robert Talavera, Alex Cacdac, and John Santos.

Last week’s qualifiers Kitz Barja, Richard Leong, Jonathan Eparwa, Michael Guirey, Raymond Angeles, Jess Rebusada, Rusty Musca, Jon Hensley, Raul Dumapit, Edgar Marquez, Noel Sicat, and Glenn Garde will join Halstead and company in the competition.

Pacific Trading Co. has put up a purse of $1,000 for the overall Pepsi King of the Lanes winner and no less than the company’s general manager, Charles Cepeda, will be on hand to award the money and the championship trophy to the winner this afternoon.

Entry fee for today’s coronation of the 2004 Pepsi King of the Lanes is $40 for the players in the Top 12 and an additional $30 for the “late” qualifiers.
