Three individuals and two teams separated themselves from the crowd this past week in sports.

In tennis, youth netter Nicolas Son won the boys’ 18-and-under title of the 24th Annual DFS Micronesian Tennis Championships and teamed up with his father, Michael, to take home the men’s open doubles crown, all in the same weekend.

Young Turk Shane Yamada and veteran Kaleb Dulei then put on a pitching performance for the ages in the Senior League and Saipan Major League, respectively.

Playing for Ol’Aces, Yamada no-hit the Aztecs in a 12-0 win Sunday afternoon at the Francisco M. Palacios Baseball Field.

The very next evening, Dulei became just the second hurler in SML history to record 700 career strikeouts in the Freedom Air Masters’ 5-2 victory over the San Antonio Metropolitans.

In the 6th Coors Light Four-Person Beach Volleyball League, L.L. Sleese Staks swept Ganbarimasho Tuesday, and coupled by Libweiirs loss to Air Biscuits the same night, the Staks remained the only unbeaten team in the competition.

Micronesian Brokers, Inc. also was a big winner Thursday in Game 1 of the Saipan Ice & Water 20th Anniversary Basketball League when they defeated Diamond Fixers to force the championship into a do-or-die game.
