UFO wins Best Float, not DCCA

The recently concluded Liberation Day festivities regretfully admitted that it was not the Department of Community and Cultural Affairs that ruled the Liberation Day Float Competition but the United Filipino Organization.

Liberation Day executive committee chair Eloy Inos said the committee made a mistake in the tabulation of this year’s best float competition.

The committee recomputed the tally sheet based on the request of the officers of UFO, said Inos.

He said the officers of the organization told him that they could not accept the fifth place finish they originally received as they had worked hard on assembling their float.

Inos said during last week’s tabulation, the officers in charge of the computation misread the total score of UFO as “2” instead of the “3.” That’s 100 points away from the original score, said Inos.

The UFO float was designed with miniature structures of bridges among countries.

Inos said that officers of the group had said that a second or third place finish would have been acceptable to them but not fifth place.

“We regret the error,” he said.

The correct ranking for the best float competition is now as follows: first place, UFO; second place, DCCA; third place, Carolinian Affairs Office; fourth place, PFC Rudy Pua/CNMI Troops; and fifth place, Jollibee Restaurant dba YCO Corp.

San Jose Village and Marianas Diva floats received consolation prizes.

The awarding of the prizes was held last Sunday at the Liberation Day carnival grounds. Inos said the DCCA kept the cash prize of $2,500 but they had to give the first place trophy to UFO.

The committee discovered the error the day after the Liberation Day. “I feel bad [about the mistake] and UFO deserves public recognition,” Inos said.
