The newly renovated Rota West Harbor Marina formally opened to the public Saturday.

Gov. Benigno R. Fitial and acting Lands and Natural Resources Secretary Ignacio Dela Cruz flew to Rota to lead the ribbon cutting for the project. Rota Mayor Joseph S. Inos and acting DLNR-Rota resident director Henry Apatang joined them at the ceremony held at the marina site in Songsong village.

The marina project included the construction of a walkway and the installation of a floating dock system. It will provide safe boating facilities for recreational vessels in Rota.

Although smaller than Saipan’s Smiling Cove Marina, the new Rota facility is more modern. The Rota marina stretches 312 feet long. It has eight-foot-wide ramps, with decks made of heavy-duty, recycled plastic. The floating dock is supported by heavy-gauge aluminum truss.

The project cost a total of $904,665, with the funds coming from the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service and the Federal Emergency Management Agency.

The Department of Lands and Natural Resources served as contracting officer for the rehabilitation project, which had been in the drawing board as early as 2001.

Winzler and Kelly Consulting Engineers provided the design and engineering services for the project. Blue Water Marine Dock Specialties performed the actual construction.
