DCCA puts the cuffs on Inspectors

Department of Community and Cultural Affairs gained a share of the lead and prolonged the winless run of the Customs Inspectors Thursday night in the resumption of the 2006 Inter-Government Basketball League.

DCCA led after every quarter and won its fifth game in six starts to tie Public School System at the helm, while exacting Customs its seventh straight loss 97-66 at the Gilbert C. Ada Gymnasium.

Swingman John Reyes set the tone early for DCCA, as the many time CNMI national baseball player erupted for 11 points to help his team build a 28-13 lead after the opening quarter.

Ando Benavente picked up where Reyes left off in the second canto, as he pumped in nine points to help DCCA to an 18-point spread, 51-23, at halftime.

The Inspectors greeted the start of the second half with more fire and it showed in their game, as they managed to keep abreast of DCCA. Thomas Santos answered the bell for Customs, punching in 10 points in the quarter.

Despite logging only a point short of DCCA’s third quarter output and doubling its first half output, Customs however still trailed by a mile, 46-75, going into the fourth and final stanza.

Multi-titled basketball coach and many time national player Elias Rangamar then made his presence felt in the final 10 minutes, scorching the hoops with 14 of his 23 points to lead DCCA to victory.

A total of four players from DCCA wound up in double digits, as forward Jonathan Tenorio (15), Benavente (14), and Reyes backed up Rangamar’s late-game brilliance.

Santos and Donny Fejeran paced Inspectors with 18 and 17 points, respectively. Dennis Reyes also added 15 points.

In the first game, Commonwealth Health Center got its sixth win in eight games handed to them on a silver platter after winning by forfeit against Department of Public Works. The loss dropped DPW to 1-6 in the team standings.

Inspectors 66 – Santos 18, Fejeran 17, Reyes 15, Cepeda 6, Sablan 5, Lizama 4, Pangelinan 1.

Scoring by quarters: 28-13, 51-23, 75-46, 97-66.
