Ada Gym gets new paint job
With the 6th Micronesian Games fast approaching, organizers are currently working toward ensuring that all facilities that will be used are in good shape for the hosting of various events.
One venue that will be hosing a lot of action is the Gilbert C. Ada Gymnasium, which was built well over a decade ago.
The gym is currently undergoing a huge facelift as employees of the Department of Public Works and the Division of Sports and Recreation have begun painting the facility’s walls.
As reported by the Micronesian Games Organizing Committee earlier, Sherwin Williams-Safety First has committed its support to the hosting of the Games and has donated four pails of paint worth $939.96.
According to DSR director Joe Lizama, who also serves as sports committee chair on the MGOC, the DPW and DSR crews began working on the project last March 13 by using water blasters to clean the surface of the walls. The crews have completed that phase and are now painting the gym, beginning yesterday.
“This donation by Sherwin Williams is a big help for the government,” Lizama said during an interview yesterday afternoon. “Things are going smoothly and I would like to thank DPW Secretary Joe Demapan for his staff assistance with the preparation of the facilities.”
Lizama said a mural designed by local artist Luis Ogo will be painted onto the wall of the gym as well.
He added that other tasks to get the gym ready are replacing light bulbs and windows and repairing the showers and restrooms.
Among the DPW crewmembers were Mike Borja, Sam Babauta, Ike Santos, Pat Takai, Rudy Sablan, Fred Caboabas, Jess Deleon Guerrero, and Luis Blas. They are under the direction of Operations and Maintenance director Alex Chong.
Also extending support was Marianas Repair, which provided a Sky Track machine that lifts painters off the ground, making it easier to paint the tall walls.
The Micronesian Games will be held from June 23 to July 3. Lizama anticipates all facilities to be ready for action by June 10.
About 1,200 to 1,500 athletes, coaches, and officials from around the region are expected to compete in the Games.
