‘Save annual leave for Micronesian Games’
Gov. Benigno R. Fitial has urged government employees to save their annual leave if they want to participate in the coming Micronesian Games.
The governor sent a memorandum on Monday advising personnel that he would not grant administrative leave or advanced annual leave to any employees of the Executive Branch who would be missing work to take part in the games.
“If you wish to participate in the sporting events, I advise you to begin saving your annual leave so you may utilize them during your days of absence,” Fitial said.
Press secretary Charles P. Reyes Jr. said yesterday that the memorandum applied to all Executive Branch employees who would be participating in the games as an athlete, volunteer or spectator.
“We are not paying people to not work, especially in this critical financial situation. If people are going to be paid, they ought to be working,” Reyes said.
Government employees earn eight hours—or one full workday—of annual leave every 14 days. This can accumulate to a total of 26 days of paid vacation each year.
The Commonwealth will host the Micronesian Games from June 24 to July 7, 2006.
