DEQ to hold workshop on safe drinking water
The Division of Environmental Quality is holding a mini-workshop today to help businesses here understand the division’s latest safe drinking water regulations.
One of the intentions of the workshop, to be held at Hyatt Regency Hotel’s Private Room B from 1 to 4 p.m., is to explain regulated and unregulated contaminants as they relate to safe drinking water, DEQ said in a release.
DEQ has started implementing additional monitoring requirements for all public water suppliers and sent written explanation on the new rules, however, many CNMI companies are still confused and have questions about the requirements.
The division hopes the workshop will explain the new requirements and answer any question that a public water supplier might have, said Michael Wright, public information officer.
“As the commonwealth continues to grow, we are seeing more materials and new chemicals arrive to our island,” according to DEQ Director Ignacio V. Cabrera.
“Things such as pesticides, used oil and other chemicals could enter our groundwater, so our Safe Drinking Water Branch had to address these matters by adding some requirements,” Cabrera added.
Barry Pollock from the Environmental Protection Agency will assist DEQ’s Safe Drinking Water Branch in explaining the latest requirement to the water supplier.
Participants to the workshop need to pay a $10 fee to cover facility costs and workshop materials.
Interested parties can register from 7:30 to 10 a.m. at the DEQ offices in San Jose or from noon to 1 p.m. at the Hyatt.
