Director of the Business Development Center Jack Peters will share the success of the student internship program of the Northern Marianas College during the annual conference of the National Business Incubation Association next week in Chicago.

As one of the presenters for this year’s gathering entitled as the “High Impact Incubation”, he will help participants set up a graduate internship program mindful of the services being offered by the business incubation.

Since 1992, the BDC at the college began conducting its internship program recruiting students from business, law, agriculture, aqua culture, economics and other disciplines.

Every year, interns from Hawaii, Vermont and other states, gather at NMC to serve as consultants in providing technical assistance to local businesses. They also act as mentors to students enrolled at NMC.

Some of these interns have worked with members of the legislature and their outputs were used as springboard in introducing business policies.

Their researches produced feasibility studies on free trade zone, ideas on how to market the CNMI internationally and other proposals to maximize local resources.

Following the positive feedback of its internship program, BDC proposed to hold an economic summit in the CNMI. This proposal gained funding from the Office of the Insular Affairs and will take place this week.

This yearly meeting among incubation centers in the U.S. offers model programs, proven tools and innovative solutions that will help utilize resources from respective communities.

At this meeting in Chicago, Peters will present the tools to start an internship program and how to maximize the talents of these interns in promoting the services of the center.

Peters moved to Saipan in 1994 to head the incubation program at NMC. Under his expansion programs, it grew to become as the Business Development Center of NMC that offered a multi-purpose business services.
